Broken Hill is a harsh environment that produces some of the most beautiful mineral specimens in the world, and the Albert Kersten Geocenter has many fine examples.
Mental Media were engaged to redesign and refurbish the museum, and we worked with Cunningham Martyn Design to raise the project. This involved a complete redesign of the interior of the heritage building and the mineral display. We condensed walls of text on the formation of the ore lode into a 10 minute presentation in the Crystal Theatre.
The mineral displays were redesigned, re-using existing showcases where possible for budget reasons, and interactive displays installed including a video microscope for examining specimens, and a guide to the mineral street names of Broken Hill.
A solid silver table centrepiece that once belonged to Charles Rasp, the founder of BHP, takes pride of place in the final gallery, accompanied by a specially commissioned poem from champion Australian bush poet Gregory North.
