An art installation for the 2014 White Night festival in Melbourne, “Voices” was based on a live performance piece by the Sydney Children’s Choir and Gondwana Choir that used story boxes (small dioramas) that performers carry through an audience, singing individual stories. The stories build to cacophony that transforms into a final, harmonious and uplifting choral segment.
Translating this to fill the Melbourne Town Hall without using any live performers (the piece had to run for 12 hours continuously, overnight) was a challenge.
Mental Media worked with longtime friend and Festival Director Andrew Walsh, and choir Director Lyn Williams, to individually film 40 of the choir performers, and then composite the results onto six giant scrim projection screens.
